In the dawning days of the Video Age of Music, there were a few videos that took advantage of the union of music and pictures to create lasting gems that are still talked about to this day.
This isn’t one of those videos.
I’ve loved the song since I first heard it in 1980, but, oy, what a bad piece of video work!
Rocky Burnette is the son of rock-and-roll pioneer Johnny Burnette. Rocky trumpeted that connection with his title of his big-label debut, Son of Rock and Roll. His style fit right in with the short-lived rockabilly revival of the early 80s. Still, his biggest hit record, “Tired Of Toein’ The Line”, has a slight twinge of Southern-style rock in it.
While I like the song, I can’t say as much for the video. Rocky is joined out in a parking lot with a piano player and several gorgeous women. Yep, Rocky beat Robert Palmer to the punch by nearly a decade.
There’s really no plot to the video at all, and the ladies couldn’t be bothered to be at least convincing as they pretend to play guitar. There’s even one woman playing an instrument that I can’t hear anywhere on the song.
They can’t all be winners, folks, and here’s the living proof. Or, if you think you just can’t take the pain, click the play button and close your eyes.
I wish I had.
